Let’s talk about the dofollow and nofollow links, what are they and what are they for?
Most of the topics that I write in this blog are given by the same questions of clients (topics that seem interesting to expose from this channel) or by the experiences given in the day to day. As I have always said, our blog is our way of sharing this knowledge and, at the same time, reaffirming what we have learned.
I’ve been writing posts related to SEO for two weeks and I think I’m going to continue talking about topics since lately we’ve had several projects focused on SEO strategy. In a previous post I wrote about how to make natural Link building and in the last post I talked about the Pagerank and Domain Authority .
Today I will talk about two relatively simple concepts, links dofollow and nofollow .
Do not obsess over the SEO of your website.
Before talking about dofollow and nofollow links , I’d like to give you a little clarification.
No matter how much you want to optimize the SEO of your website, if you do not have a well structured page, that offers a good user experience both desktop and mobile, with a very attractive design that attracts and keeps your visitors, that have well ranked content with calls to action … etc.
In general, if you do not offer a good user experience or if you do not offer valuable content, the web will not convert, and all the time, energy and money invested in an SEO and Backlinks strategy will have been in vain.
That said, now if we talk about links dofollow and nofollow .
Importance of the links
As I explained in the previous posts, the links matter a lot, because they influence the relevance of your website. The more web pages you recommend with a link pointing to yours, Google will take you into account because it interprets the linked content of your website is of value and consequently you will be positively rated so that your positioning improves.
To give you an idea, Google believes that a link pointing to your website is like a kind of “score”. The higher the link quality, the higher the score that Google will give you and this will influence your positioning. For example, the link of a web page of great authority such as the University of Barcelona, will benefit you much more than the fact that they mention you with a link from a blog or website with a year old and moderate visits.
What is a Dofollow link?
The dofollow links are commonly the normal links. That is, by default all links are dofollow. If we saw them in HTML code, a dofollow link has this structure:
The fact of putting a natural link to another site means that you are telling the Google Bots to follow this link because it is as if you are recommending them to visit that page. But at the same time, this type of link transfers part of the authority of your web to the web that the link points to.
To give you an idea, it is as if you were giving a positive vote to the web you link, since it is assumed that if you mention it is because it should have some valuable content and that is why it is worth visiting. This fact makes the linked website increase its Authority (because it is recommended) and yours slightly decrease the famous Link-Juice.
In SEO this transfer concept is called Link-Juice , to understand it in a more graphic way, the guys from Quondos explain it very well.
Now, the fact that you lose link-juice by recommending a website is not bad at all, on the contrary, Google likes that you contribute useful information. In fact, we usually put links to our post because this is a coherent way to give truth to the content that we offer. We just do not have to abuse this.😉
With which, although you rests on the one hand, you win for another. The truth is that the one who usually recommends, if you do things right, in the long run is also recommended. As everything in life.🙂
What is a Nofollow link?
For this case, if you add the “no follow” attribute in a link, you are telling Google directly not to follow this link. If we saw them in HTML code, a nofollow link has this structure:
That said, this type of link also does not transfer the link-juice of your web page to the linked one. But that does not stop being a link, so if a user clicks on this link, it will go to the aforementioned website in a normal way. So, facing a user, it is a normal link that will add value and, if necessary, it will carry truth to what you are explaining.
Although it may not seem like it, this type of link has advantages for both the website that puts the link and the linked website. On your website, if we add all the internal and external links there should be a balance between the links follow and no follow approximate to 30/70.
