 When writing a post for your blog or update your profiles on social networks, one of the questions frequently  is: What is the character limit for each? And an even more important question is: what is the  ideal number to optimize SEO or achieve?

E s probably know that the character limit for a tweet is 140. But know that a link occupies 24 of those characters, leaving you with just 116 for writing a tweet? Or did you know that the ideal length of a tweet that includes a link is approximately 120 characters, not 140?

While we have discussed what the perfect publication for your blog and social networks are different, we believed it would be useful to gather the limits and ideal numbers of characters, all in one Luga r.

Below is the short version as well as a more detailed guide to the limits and the ideal number of characters for your blog posts and your Facebook pages, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram. The more detailed version includes links to research studies, our own findings in HubSpot and tips on optimizing your posts and profiles.

Length and number of characters:

We started with the short version you use it as a reference. (Click on the title of a category to go to the detailed version)

1) blog posts

  • Ideal length of a title: 8 to 12 words and less than 70 characters.
  • Ideal length of a publication:  1600 words or 7 minutes of reading.
  • Ideal length of a title tag:  70 characters or less.
  • Ideal length of a meta Description:  155 characters or less.

2) Facebook

  • Maximum length of a status update: 63 characters.
  • Ideal length of a status update: 40 characters.
  • Ideal duration of a video:  from 30 to 45 seconds.

3) Twitter

  • Tweet:  140 characters.
  • Comment with retweet:  116 characters.
  • Link in a tweet: occupies 24 characters (there are 116 free).
  • Image / GIF / video in a tweet: occupy 25 characters (there are 115 free).
  • Link + Image / GIF / video in a tweet: occupy 47 characters (93 are free).
  • Ideal length of a tweet: 100 characters without bond; 120 characters link.
  • Ideal length of a hashtag: 11 characters or less, if possible. Use 1 to 2 hashtags per tweet.
  • Duration of a video in a tweet: up to 30 seconds.

4) LinkedIn

  • Professional header: 120 characters.
  • Summary: 2,000 characters.
  • Job Title: 100 characters.
  • Status update:  600 characters.

5) Instagram

  • Biography Profile: 150 characters.
  • Caption: 2,200 characters, but cuts in the latest news from users after 3 lines of text.

 

Length and number of characters [Detailed Guide]

1) Publication

  • Ideal length of a header: 8 to 12 words and less than 70 characters.
  • Ideal length of a publication:  1600 words or 7 minutes of reading.
  • Ideal length of a title tag:  70 characters or less.
  • Ideal length of a meta Description:  155 characters or less.

The length of your header  depends on what your goals are and wherewill appear.

  • Would you classify this publication really well in search? If so, make sure the title does not exceed 70 characters to not be shortened in the results of search engines and places keywords in the initial part to make it more attractive in the search results.
  • Want to optimize your title so that it can be shared on social networks? To be “twitteable” must not exceed 116 characters (the limit of Twitter is 140 minus the 23 characters occupying a URL in a tweet, but one rather than using the space between the title and link).

In our own analysis in HubSpot, we discovered that the headers with a length of between 8 and 12 words are, on average, the most widely shared on Twitter, while headers with 12 or 14 words get the most “I like ” on Facebook.

Outbrain companions discovered that headers with eight words had a clickthrough rate 21% higher than average titles. I recommend trying the length of your header to see what works best depending on your particular audience.

This probably is not what you want to hear, but the best answer to the question about the length you should have a blog publication is: as much as necessary . Blog posts vary greatly depending on the subject, depth and other factors, so it is difficult to establish a single reference. It should be as long as necessary to fulfill its objective, whether it is providing intellectual leadership, increase sales opportunities, explaining a new concept or anything else.

That said, if you want cold and raw numbers, there are some ways to measure the ideal length of your publications.

Reading time: co-Medium measure the length of the articles in the time it takes for a person to read a specific article. According to his analysis , the post that on average, caught more attention, readers were able to finish reading in seven minutes (containing approximately 1,600 words).

Number of words in HubSpot, recently analyzed the effect of the number of words in a blog publishing on organic traffic from our own blog and discovered that the ideal number was between 2,250 and 2,500 words.

We also discovered that items with more than 2,500 words were the most widely shared on social networks and obtained most of the inbound links.

Surely you’re thinking there ‘s a big difference between 1,600 and more than 2,250 words. This is due to the incredible variation in the length of a publication. We recommend testing the length of your publications to find out what works best for your particular audience.

ideal length of a title tag: 70 characters or less.

A title tag is the HTML title element is used to describe the subject of a web page. You will find it in the title of the result pages of search engines (SERP) and the top bar of a browser.

A title tag should contain 70 characters or less so that it is not shortened in a SERP of Google. This number may vary, as Google makes the measurement in pixels, not characters. In other words, cut a title tag after a certain width: about 512 pixels . Google also uses bold type in some keywords used in a search query, which can greatly affect the width of pixels. Therefore, 70 characters is a good number.

Ideal length of a meta Description: 155 characters or less.

A meta description refers to the HTML attribute that explains the content of a particular website. Is the short description you see a SERP for a “preview” on page content.

As with title tags, it seems that Google shortens the meta descriptions in SERP depending on the width of the pixels, not the number of characters. Specifically, some meta description shortened after read this blog article for more information on how to write effective meta descriptions).

2) Facebook

  • Maximum length of a status update: 63206 characters.
  • Ideal length of a status update: 40 characters.
  • Ideal Length of video:  from 30 to 45 seconds.

Most believe that the character limit for status updates of Facebook is 60,000 characters, but the real limit is 63,206. Why? Bob Baldwin Facebook (it was he who established the limit)  wrote in a comment on Facebook : ” I set the exact limit with a reference nerd. Facebook: Face Boo K … hex (FACE) – K … 64206-1000 = 63206. ” There you have the answer.

“The gurus of social networks use 40 characters , ” says “These data appear to be supported by the classification that gave BuzzSumo the Facebook page HubSpot , although ideally want to use your message in a status update to provide context for what you want to link.”

That said, Hunersen explains that, in his experience, the message status update itself is not as important as the text of the meta title or meta description that appears when you insert a link to your publication. “Often, people will observe the cover and then look directly at the meta title and meta description for clues about the context,” he explained. “Many do not know that can change.”

(Meta titles should be 70 characters or less, while the meta descriptions should be 155 characters or less. You can get more detailed information on the number of characters in the previous section of this publication).

ideal duration of a video: between 30 and 45 seconds.

While they were not carried out many studies on the ideal length of the videos on Facebook, best practices for sharing videos on social networking sites recommended to be brief: enough to communicate a compelling message time, but without forcing users leave their environment.

According to AdWeek , the AutoPlay Facebook makes videos 30 to 45 seconds are perfect. In HubSpot, we have found that our organic video with better performance last about 30 seconds.

 

That said, the optimal duration may vary depending on the subject. "If you produce something as catchy as proposed BuzzFeed and Refinery29 , can be up to five minutes , " explains Hunersen.

Regardless of the length, Hunersen reminds us that all Facebook videos without sound start, which means that users should decide to stop their latest move by the silence and take video. A video of Facebook should be visually appealing from the start, make sense without sound and be striking enough to make the user stops to see.

3) Twitter

  • Tweet:  140 characters.
  • Comment with retweet:  116 characters.
  • Link in a tweet: occupies 24 characters (there are 116 free).
  • Image / GIF / video in a tweet: occupy 25 characters (there are 115 free).
  • Link + Image / GIF / video in a tweet: occupy 47 characters (93 are free).
  • Ideal length of a tweet: 100 characters without a bond; 120 characters with a link.
  • Ideal length of a hashtag: 11 characters or less, if possible. Use 1 to 2 hashtags per tweet.
  • Duration of a video in a tweet: up to 30 seconds.

Maximum length of a comment with a retweet: 116 characters.

When you use the 'Retweet with comment "feature Twitter , you select the icon of rotating arrows to retweet a post, then add a comment in the text box provided. The retweet occupies 24 characters, leaving you 116 characters available for your comment.




Link in a tweet: occupies 23 characters (there are 117 free).

The bonds represent  92% of all user interactions with the tweets, so you definitely want to include them in almost all (or all) tweets that you post. They are your best opportunity to receive views and comments to your content.

Also, remember to include a space between the text and tweet your link. Do not include a space before is one of the most common ways in which links give error link.

Image / GIF / video in a tweet: occupies 24 characters (there are 116 free).

Use multimedia files on your tweet is a great way to interact with your followers. In fact, research shows that use images in tweets generated clickthrough rates up to 18%.

Images, GIFs and videos occupy the same amount of characters in a tweet on Twitter.com and most publishing tools.

(Note: the various publishing tools may have some difference in the number of characters for links and images For example, Twitter.com has an image as 24 characters, but Tweetdeck account as 25.).



Want to add more text to your tweets? A simple trick is to add text to an image, as you can see in the tweet below. Here are some free templates to start (the best for Twitter are social media> rectangular folder).




Link + image in a tweet: occupy 47 characters total (93 are free).

In general, a link occupies 23 characters and an image, 24. It has a total of 47 characters, leaving you free 93 characters to write the rest of the tweet, including the space between text and tweet the link.

(Again, note that the various publishing tools may have some small differences in the number of characters for links and images).




ideal length of a tweet: from 100 to 110 characters without a bond; 120 to 130 characters with a link.

The range of 120 to 130 characters is ideal for a high clickthrough rate, retwittearte manually .

While a hashtag of Twitter can technically contain up to 140 characters, remember that people probably want to accompany the hashtag with other text. Short hashtags are always the best. Ideally, your hashtags containing 11 characters or, if possible, less.

Also, try to use one or two hashtags in one tweet and never superes three. Buddy Media found that tweets with hashtags duplicate the results of interaction metrics those without hashtags; however, tweets with one or two hashtags have a 21% higher interaction tweets hashtags three or more .

Duration of a video in a tweet: up to 30 seconds.

You can post a video on Twitter to import or burn the Twitter app. Regardless of how you choose, the maximum duration is 30 seconds.




4) LinkedIn

  • Professional header: 120 characters.
  • Summary: 2,000 characters.
  • Job Title: 100 characters.
  • Status update:  600 characters.

Your professional header is the brief description of what you do and that appears just below your name on LinkedIn.

Maximum length of the title of a post on LinkedIn: 100 characters.

LinkedIn Job Description: between 200 and 2,000 characters.

maximum length of a status update on LinkedIn: 600 characters.

Note that if you update your Twitter status via LinkedIn, you should limit the number of characters to 140 or less.

5) Instagram

  • Biography Profile: 150 characters.
  • Caption: 2,200 characters, but cuts in the latest news from users after 3 lines of text.

Maximum length profile of a biography of 150 characters.

With a maximum of 2,200 characters, Instagram offers plenty of room in their captions. However, it is important to note that Instagram recently began to limit the captions only three lines without requiring users to click on "More" to see all the caption, if they see the publication in its general screen latest News.

However, we do not recommend that captions are too short to allow users to view 100% of the text without having to click "More". On the contrary, start your caption with the most important content or calls to action text and let other hashtag, mentions with @ or external information to the end.
