You know how to use pagination on your site correctly? Without prejudice to index your pages in Google?

In the seventh chapter of RDicas, Aluysio Ferreira, consultant SEO of results Digital, explains two ways to deal with pagination on your site. It also speaks in a way that many people often do, but it is recommended to avoid.

Before you begin, it is worth explaining a little the reason that led us to talk about it.

Recently launched Quiz SEO , in partnership with the Master Agency . In this quiz, one of the questions was related to the use of the canonical tag.

Interestingly, it was one of the quiz questions that got a very high rate of error. So, we decided to choose this topic because we believe it is doubt many SEO professionals, entrepreneurs and microrempreendedores.

Later we will explain when you should and when you should not use a canonical tag in pagination on a website. But first, let’s talk about the paging itself.

What is paging on the site?

Paging on a website or a blog is when you have many products or articles to be displayed on a category page, or even in the home site, and need to split them.

In some sites, there is a setting to break these products / articles into multiple pages for easy navigation.

Example: Imagine you have a blog and this reached number 100 published articles. Or even less. There in the bottom of the page, depending on your template, there will be a link to the page 2, page 3, page 4, and so on.

The same goes for a category of products. When there are many items on the same page, it is also common to have this break.

Canonical tag in paging: a common mistake

A wrong technique in relation to the use of the canonical tag refers to its use in paging just a website. This error is nothing more than identifying multiple pages and create a tag for each of these canonical pages, pointing to page 1 or page.

The canonical tag, for those unaware, is a code that we use when there is duplicate content. The tag is used to talk to the Google robot that the page is a duplicate version of the original content. It’s a tag that will inserted in the <head> html, and points to the original page.

That’s why this kind of use of the canonical tag in pagination, is wrong. But you should not do this? Simple. For page 2, page 3 and the others are not duplicated contents of page 1.

Ok, but what about what will happen if you use the tag incorrectly? What happens is that the second page will not show indexed in Google because the search engine will understand that it is doubled. Nor the other pages that will be with a canonical tag will appear.

It is correct that when you do this, you transfer the authority to page 1, but there are smarter and better ways to apply it. And that’s what we will see now.

2 ways to apply pagination on your site correctly

If using the canonical tag is not recommended for paging a website, what should we do then?

Well, there are two ways. Come on:

1 – ” Rel next”  and ” Rel prev”

The first way is to use another tag, which is not canonical. It’s a tag that brings a relationship between the two pages, stating what is the next page, which is the earlier.

When we did this, we show Google that there is a paging. And Google will consequently index all pages, not just the first. However, it will always give preference in the search result to display page 1, for the seeker understands obvious that page 1 is the beginning of the category pages sequence or the home of your site.

Being more específio, how do we work this? It’s a tag that also goes in the  <head>  of your website. Taking an example of a page that is divided into three others:

Page 1: <link rel = “next” href = “url_da_página_2”>

Page 2: <link rel = “next” href = “url_da_página_1” rel = “next” href = “url_da_página_3”>

Page 3: <link rel = “prev” href = “url_da_página_2”>

In short: On the first page, you show what is the next page through the rel next. On the second page, you show what the previous and the next page through prev rel and rel next. And on the third page (or last), you show what is only the anterior through rel prev , since there is no next one.

This is a structure that can be used without fear and the wrong use of the canonical tag.

2 – Scroll Infinite

There is a proper way to use the canonical tag, but has nothing to do with the first way commented on this post.

The method consists in creating an infinite scroll page. In other words, it is a page that brings together all the content at once.

In this case, you can work with paging and create a tag canonical in each of them to say that the original content is all assembled on one page only. Thus, Google will only display the page in the search results.

It’s another way to work with paging on the site, and you decide which way you think carries a better browsing experience for your visitors.

“My site has rel next nor rel prev

This is a factor there, but you do not need to panic if true.

Google really understand that not all sites have these tags and is not for this reason that it will stop indexing. When we bring the tag rel prev and rel next , what we do is help Google better understand the content of our site.

It is recommended that these tags are inserted in the <head> of your site, but if not, keep calm and do not panic.
